Communications and Community Engagement Intern (Unpaid)

Internship Overview:
We are seeking a college-level student interested in communications, nonprofit work or healthcare to support our mission by helping with digital engagement, social media, email newsletters, and community management. This is a valuable opportunity for students looking to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, healthcare advocacy, and digital marketing while making a real impact on the lives of families affected by MLC.
Key Responsibilities:
- Email & Newsletter Support: Assist in drafting, designing, and scheduling bi-monthly newsletters to keep supporters and families informed about MLC research and community updates.
- Social Media Management: Help create, schedule, and monitor content across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to expand our digital presence and increase engagement.
- Web updates: Make content updates on the Alliance MLC website, as indicated by the Executive Director.
- Content Creation: Develop blog posts, infographics, and short-form video content that effectively communicate research advancements, family stories, and fundraising efforts.
- Community Engagement: Interact with families, specialists and supporters online to foster a welcoming and supportive community.
- Event & Awareness Campaigns: Assist in the promotion and organization of virtual events, scientific symposiums, and awareness campaigns.
- Analytics & Reporting: Track engagement and communication effectiveness, offering insights to improve outreach strategies.
Qualifications:
- Current college student pursuing a degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Nonprofit Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms, content creation tools (Canva, Adobe, etc.), email marketing tools (i.e. Constant Contact), and word press.
- Passion for health advocacy, nonprofit work, and rare disease awareness.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote setting.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated volunteer/intern from the MLC community and beyond who is passionate about organizing online events, webinars, and discussions to educate and connect families, researchers, and healthcare professionals. The Community Webinar & Event Coordinator will take the lead in planning, scheduling, and hosting virtual events on key topics such as clinical research updates, disease management, family experiences, and available support resources.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to actively contribute to the rare disease, and particularly the MLC community, develop leadership and organizational skills, and help create valuable learning opportunities for families and professionals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan & Coordinate Webinars: Organize and manage virtual events covering a wide range of topics relevant to the MLC community.
- Facilitate Speaker Outreach: Work with researchers, doctors, patient advocates, and families to schedule guest speakers for presentations and panel discussions.
- Engage the Community: Gather input from families and community members on topics they want to learn about, ensuring content is relevant and impactful.
- Schedule & Promote Events: Set up webinars using Zoom or similar platforms and coordinate outreach through email, social media, and the Alliance MLC newsletter and website.
- Moderate & Host Sessions: Serve as a webinar host or moderator, as needed, ensuring smooth discussions and participant engagement.
- Create Post-Event Resources: Help summarize key takeaways, upload recordings (if applicable), and share helpful resources with the community.
Ideal Candidate:
- A member of the MLC community (parent, caregiver, patient, or advocate) who is passionate about supporting others.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with an interest in event planning.
- Comfortable using Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or other webinar tools (or willing to learn).
- Collaborative mindset, able to work with medical professionals, families, and advocacy groups.
- Experience with social media, email marketing, or nonprofit communications is a plus, but not required.
- Intermediate+ level of English required. Other languages are a plus.
